Dormant accounts and renewal timing
Practical cues for when quiet B2B accounts need a conversation before the renewal window closes.
A dormant account is rarely a surprise if usage reporting runs on a steady cadence. Silence for one quiet month can be seasonal; three months of near-zero activity before a renewal date is a signal.
In application analytics for B2B account usage reporting, we mark dormancy against the same activity threshold used in the prior cycle. Changing the threshold every quarter makes trend lines useless for account owners.
Pair dormancy with named contacts. A report that says ‘Account X is quiet’ helps little; a report that notes ‘no sessions from the named champion since March’ gives the account manager a reason to call.
Bring dormant findings into renewal planning at least eight weeks early. That window leaves room for a usage walkthrough, a training offer, or a commercial adjustment before procurement papers are locked.
